My Top Holiday Destinations

My Top Holiday Destinations

I have been really fortunate to have visited cities all over the world in my life. My parents were able to take my sister and I to many countries when we were children and since being with Mr H we have saved hard to see places we have always wanted to. Today I thought I would compile a list of my top destinations I have been fortunate enough to visit and maybe give you some inspiration.

This is not normally a country that would have been at the top of my list, but our friends got married out there so we had the opportunity to visit and we absolutely loved this beautiful country. We stayed in a small house which had its own lake where we could fish and row along. We visited in July where Finland only sees two hours of darkness a day and it was strange but quite magical sitting in the daylight until midnight. We also visited the capital Helsinki four a couple of days whilst we were there and really enjoyed the markets and the nightlife. I researched before we left and found an ice bar and a rooftop bar and both were fantastic destinations for a cocktail and unique experience.

My Top Spot: Arctic Ice Bar, Helsinki

I have been very fortunate to visit Australia twice in my teenage years. Both my parents have family out there so it was a great excuse to visit, and we went for three weeks each time. We visited Sydney, Cairns, Brisbane and Perth and each one had its own special pull. I think if I had to pick one to return to it would be Cairns, as there we sailed on the Barrier Reef and went scuba diving, as well as taking the cable car across to the tropical village of Kuranda, set in the rainforest.

My Top Spot: Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb

After lots of saving Mr H and I spent our honeymoon in a breathtaking resort in the Maldives. It took about fifteen hours to get to Male but once you do you either catch a boat or sea plane across to your resort, which is great fun. Once there it is a place that can only be seen to be believed – fine, white sands and clear blue waters and such peace. We stayed in a water bungalow which has it’s own deck and steps down into the sea and many a day Mr H went off snorkeling, seeing turtles and sharks as he swam around.

My Top Spot: Kuredu Resort

Venice was a city I’ve always wanted to visit – you hear so much about how beautiful and romantic it is, and I have to say it didn’t disappoint. We visited in August and despite being warned the canals can smell at that time of year we did not notice anything. We enjoyed seeing the sights such as Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s Basilica, as well as a lovely gondola ride off the beaten track, however most of all we loved just wandering around and taking it all in. Venice is a fantastic place just to get lost in and absorb all the architecture and history, and though it can be expensive there are plenty of little cafes and restaurants off the beaten track that won’t break the bank.

My Top Spot: Basilica Di Santa Maria Maggiore

New York

In 2010 we relocated to the Big Apple and it was a once in a lifetime experience. We lived there for eight months and I can honestly say when I look back now it was an amazing adventure. Living there as much as we did and hosting various family members, I have seen most of the tourist destinations several times, but that didn’t matter at all. The city really is addictive, with its bright lights and fast-paced atmosphere, and I often reflect back wistfully on our time there and look forward to one day returning.

My Top Spot: New York Water Taxi Boat Tour

I hope I’ve given you a bit of inspiration for your next big holiday – if you have any questions about the above destinations I will happily answer them.
